The half-pint wide-mouth jar is an extremely useful size and shape. I use these jars for freezing individual servings of soups, cooked lentils, etc. (you can buy durable, white screw-on plastic storage lids for the purpose, made by Ball.) The wide mouth means that thawing food is easier to get out of the jar when you're ready to use it, since the sides of the jar are straight. This size jar has been hard to find -- I'm glad Cooking.com carries it.
I used these jars for a layered pudding dessert, they were perfect. I was able to get a 1/2 cup serving of pudding into the container with the additional toppings. The wide mouth makes it easier to get the spoon into the jar. I was using regular mouth jars, and it was just not as easy to get all the layers in one spoonful.
I got these jars to store my breakfast overnight oats in and they work beautifully. I can make up a batch on Sunday and have enough jars for the two of us all week. It's the perfect serving size, portable, and I'm not using plastic.
I saw a bread recipe that called for this size ... a perfect and clever add-on to your place settings! And ... the uses for this 8 oz. wide mouth are limited only by the imagination!
